Blinde liefde in short
Blind Love begins with a banker who will not trust a warning and ends with a woman who learns, too late, what her trust has cost. Between those points, Iris Henley chooses a reckless man over a steady one, saves him three times, and marries him. Money troubles and a doctor with a plan draw the couple into a secret scheme.
What Blinde liefde is about
What would you do if a letter told you to look behind a milestone for a broken teacup? In Ardoon, Ireland, in 1881, the banker Sir Giles Mountjoy sends his head clerk on just such an errand. The strange task grows into a story of secret societies and a crime planned with cold care.
Blind Love is a Victorian thriller by Wilkie Collins, who died in 1889 before he could finish it. Walter Besant brought it to its close. It follows Iris Henley, who loves a reckless Irish lord named Harry, while her steady friend Hugh Mountjoy loves her. You get the people who drive the plot and the ideas beneath it.
Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this if you like Victorian suspense with a strong heroine, secret plots, doctors with dark motives, and love and conscience pulling against each other.

A broken teacup starts the trouble
The book opens in the Irish town of Ardoon in 1881. Sir Giles Mountjoy, a banker who loves his own importance, wakes to find a letter on his table. It demands two proofs of his good faith. He sends for his head clerk, Dennis Howmore.
Dennis must look behind the first milestone on the road to Garvan, where he finds only a piece of a broken teacup. Then he must open the third volume of Gibbon at the Reading Rooms. Between two pages lies a sheet of paper pierced with tiny holes. Sir Giles explains nothing, and his clerk is hurt.
A second letter arrives, written in a muddle of broken words. Dennis lays the holed paper over it, and clear sentences appear. The writer gives one firm order: do not go to the police. Sir Giles sees a plot against his life. Dennis notices the words one of your family and thinks of Arthur, the banker's nephew. The banker waves the idea away, because a vain man hears only what flatters him. A warning ignored out of vanity sets the whole story moving.

Vragen over Blinde liefde

Who finished Blind Love after Wilkie Collins?
Walter Besant completed the novel after Collins's health failed. Collins died in 1889. The later chapters follow the plans laid earlier, with shorter scenes that move quickly toward the final events.
Who are the Invincibles in Blind Love?
The Invincibles are a secret society of assassins in Ireland, based on the real political violence of the early 1880s. Lord Harry joins them, and later he tries to leave, which makes him a danger to himself.
Is Blind Love easy to follow?
Short chapters, clear scenes, and a lively narrator make it easy to follow. The chapters build suspense through discoveries and reversals, and the doctor and Fanny Mere give the story humor and tension.
What is the main message of Blind Love?
The book shows that love can blind a good person to a partner's faults, and that small deceits grow into large ones. It also praises loyalty and clear sight, shown best by Hugh and Fanny.
