Billy Budd, Chapter 4: samenvatting

Wat er gebeurt

1. The narrator announces a detour prompted by Nelson and compares modern changes in naval warfare with the introduction of firearms.
2. He argues that older commanders’ virtues survive technological change and presents the Victory as a reproach to modern warships.
3. He considers critics who blame Nelson’s conspicuous appearance for his death and suggest that his survival might have prevented further losses.
4. He questions this speculation and points to Nelson’s careful preparations at Copenhagen.
5. He defends glory pursued through duty and compares Nelson’s battle dress to preparation for a sacrifice.

Waar je op kunt letten

The narrator challenges arguments built on imagined alternatives to Nelson’s death. This supports his move from practical objections toward a defense of heroic action.
