Voorbij het lustprincipe in short

Freud begins with the claim that the mind seeks pleasure, then shows where it fails. Shock dreams and repeated scenes in treatment revive painful experiences, and the spool game turns loss into mastery. He concludes that a repetition compulsion exists, older than the pleasure principle.

What Voorbij het lustprincipe is about

Why would a mind choose to relive its worst moments? A patient dreams again and again of a disaster and wakes in terror. A small boy throws a spool into his cot, over and over.

Sigmund Freud published Beyond the Pleasure Principle in 1920, just after the First World War had filled hospitals with men haunted by shock. His theory said the mind seeks pleasure and avoids pain. Here he tests that rule against hard cases and follows the evidence into biology and an ancient Greek myth. You hear an honest thinker at work.

Voor wie is het?. This is for readers drawn to dreams, memory and why people repeat their mistakes, and for anyone curious how a great thinker tests his own theory in the open.

The pleasure principle rules, but not completely

Freud begins with the rule his theory already holds. The mind treats tension as unpleasant and release of tension as pleasant. Mental life works to keep excitation low, or at least steady. This is the pleasure principle.

But Freud admits it cannot be the whole story. If the mind simply followed pleasure, most of what happens inside us would feel good, and ordinary life shows the opposite. The first check is the reality principle. A baby wants satisfaction now, yet the world is dangerous, so the growing ego learns to wait and to take the roundabout road to pleasure.

The second check is conflict inside the mind. Some instincts do not fit the ego, so they are pushed away, which Freud calls repression. When one slips through by a back door, the ego feels it as pain. Neurotic suffering is pleasure that cannot be felt as pleasure.

The pleasure principle is a strong tendency, not an absolute law.

Vragen over Voorbij het lustprincipe

What is Beyond the Pleasure Principle about?

It asks why the mind repeats painful experiences, as in traumatic dreams, children's games and patterns in treatment. Freud argues these show a repetition compulsion beyond the pleasure principle, and he goes on to propose life and death instincts.

What is the pleasure principle in Freud's theory?

It is the idea that the mind works to lower or steady its level of tension, feeling pain when tension rises and pleasure when it falls. Freud treats it as a strong tendency that other forces can check.

What is the repetition compulsion?

It is an urge to repeat earlier experiences, including painful ones, shown in the dreams of shock victims, a child's spool game, patients' behaviour in treatment and the recurring fates of some lives.

What does the fort-da game with the spool mean?

A boy of eighteen months throws a spool away and pulls it back, saying words for gone and there. Freud reads it as a way to master his mother's absence by staging it himself.

What is the death drive Freud describes here?

It is Freud's idea that instinct aims to restore an earlier state, and that the earliest state is lifelessness. He sets it against Eros, the life instincts, and presents the claim as speculation.
