Who Barnaby Rudge is

Barnaby Rudge is about twenty-two when we meet him, living with his mother near the Maypole Inn. He is born on the night of an old murder at the Warren, a mystery that shadows their lives. He has limited understanding but quick feelings, and his gentle nature makes him loved by his neighbors.

Barnaby Rudge and the others in the story

Mary Rudge watches over her son with patience and fear, hoping to keep him away from outside influences. Barnaby does not understand her anxiety, and the secrets she keeps leave him unable to judge the dangers around him. His companion Grip rides on his shoulder, bringing a sharp comic voice into their uncertain world.

How Barnaby Rudge changes

The Protestant Association draws Barnaby toward its cause with praise, a flag to carry and the excitement of marching. He believes he is serving something noble, while the music and drums dazzle him. Mary pleads with him to stay away, but his readiness to trust makes him vulnerable to those seeking followers.
