A boast at supper becomes a ruinous wager
The story opens at a revel in Bardelys's Paris house, where the guests are making fun of the Comte de Chatellerault. The Count has just come home beaten from Languedoc, where Roxalanne de Lavedan refused him. Bardelys welcomes his rival with great kindness, yet the mood in the room is brittle.
A tipsy friend named La Fosse toasts the cold and lovely Roxalanne. Later Bardelys claims that any woman can be won by a man who sets his mind to it. Chatellerault dares him to go to Lavedan.
Bardelys is jaded, and the idea of something new begins to pull at him. He leaps up and pledges his castle and his Picardy estates that he will court and marry Roxalanne within three months. Chatellerault accepts, staking his lands in Normandy. Young Armand de Mironsac begs them to stop, but Bardelys sharply silences him and demands Chatellerault's answer.
A boast made to impress a crowd can bind you harder than any signed contract.

Who is Bardelys and why is he called the Magnificent?
Bardelys is a French marquis at the court of Louis XIII. Paris calls him the Magnificent for his lavish suppers, large household and splendid style. The book shows how little those things mean next to honest love.

No, the plot and characters are invented. Sabatini set them in a real period, the reign of Louis XIII, with real events such as the rising of the Duke of Montmorency in Languedoc and the King's journey south.
Is Bardelys the Magnificent easy to read?
Yes in tone, since Bardelys tells the tale in a lively, witty voice. Chapters are short and end on a pull, and the plot moves from scene to scene with duels, chases, disguises and clear, vivid writing.
