Een Australisch meisje in short

An Australian Lassie follows one headstrong girl through a few crowded weeks in the bush and city around Sydney. Betty Bruce is poor, quick and fearless, and she is sure she can reunite her mother with a stern sea captain and make her family rich. Her plans become a ghost visit, a fight in her brother's clothes and a flight to sing on city corners, and each lands her in new trouble.

What Een Australisch meisje is about

Picture a small girl on a school bench, brown eyes fixed on a new boy, while the master asks how she fell twenty-two places in one afternoon. This is Elizabeth Bruce, called Betty, and her answer is bold, funny and aimed at exactly the wrong person.

An Australian Lassie is a children's novel by Lilian Turner, set in the bush north of Sydney Harbour in the days of horse coaches and slate pencils. Betty, twelve and a bit, decides to mend her mother's old quarrel with her sea-captain father and make everyone rich. Every plan goes comically wrong.

Voor wie is het?. Made for readers who love spirited girls, family comedy and the Australian bush, and for anyone who enjoys a warm storyteller's voice and children with grand plans.

A bold girl falls to the bottom of class

Wygate School opens with a roll call. Mr. Sharman reads the class order aloud, and at the very bottom, in twenty-third place, sits Elizabeth Bruce. Only yesterday she was first.

Her answer is a small speech, and she aims every word at the new boy, John Brown, who waits by the master's desk for a seat. She pulled a girl's hair and lost three places. Then she whispered the spelling of giraffe to her twin brother Cyril, and down she went.

Things get worse. Brown is placed one seat above her, and she whispers cheat at him and kicks his boot. Then he works a huge multiplication so easily that his answer includes a decimal point, which the class has not learned. By lunch he sits at the head of the class, while Elizabeth writes lines fifty times.

Betty is proud, quick and hot-tempered, and she tells the truth even when it costs her dearly.

Betty's pride and plain honesty land her in trouble, and they are exactly what make her easy to love.
