Een Amerikaanse suffragette in short

Dr. John Earl comes home to New York a famous healer, engaged to a wealthy young woman and unaware that the city has changed. A suffrage parade and a lawyer named Silvia Holland draw him into a world of working women and new ideas.

What Een Amerikaanse suffragette is about

The story in 9 parts

A celebrated doctor returns to a changing city

The novel opens on a New York pier, where reporters crowd around Dr. John Earl. He has been away eighteen months, studying healing in Europe and India. A young reporter tells a wild tale of how Earl saved a copper king in Paris, and an older newsman sets it straight. Earl used a method learned in India to hold a weak patient in a deep sleep for surgery.

Earl refuses every interview. Waiting for him are his sister Hilda, his lively younger brother Frank, and his fiancée Leonora Kimball. Society calls the match perfect, but Stevens hints that it rests on looks and money.

Then the city surprises him. From his hotel window he sees a suffrage parade, and at the head of the banner carriers marches a tall young woman in white. He has seen her twice before, in London and at the Paris opera. That night Hilda names her. She is Silvia Holland, a law graduate who lives by her own work.

A man who has studied everything except his own heart is about to meet the woman who will change what he sees.

Frank wins Carroll, and the couples go on serving their cause.
