Een romance van twee werelden in short
A Romance of Two Worlds follows one young woman through a cure, a friendship and a journey. She begins as a worn out musician and ends as a student of a strange science, which says every person carries an electric spark of the soul and the universe is held in a ring of light and love. Along the way you meet a painter who heals by presence, a healer who needs no fee, a radiant sister, and a prince who learns that wanting is not the same as loving.
What Een romance van twee werelden is about
A young musician cannot sleep, cannot work and cannot bear music, the one thing she loves. Her doctor sends her to the Riviera, and there a calm Italian painter looks at her once and her nerves go quiet. How does a stranger do that, and what is in the glass of water he snatches from her hand?
A Romance of Two Worlds is the first novel of Marie Corelli, who published it in the 1880s. She tells it in the first person and says plainly in her prologue that she does not expect to be believed. The book gives the listener a cure, a friendship, a love never fulfilled, a voyage among the planets and a theory of Christianity built on electricity.
Voor wie is het?. You will enjoy this book if you like Victorian romances with a touch of the marvelous, stories of healing and friendship, and bold ideas about science and faith.

A sleepless musician travels south to Cannes
The story opens in a London winter. The narrator, a young musician, suffers from months of insomnia, dread and exhaustion. Even music, her one passion, wearies her, and her doctor fails to help.
He sends her to the Riviera with two American friends, Colonel Everard and his quick, fashionable wife Amy. They settle in a hotel in Cannes, among roses and orange trees, but her old misery creeps back after a few days of false cheer.
At the same hotel lives Raffaello Cellini, a young Italian painter whose colors seem almost too rich to be true. When he passes her in the garden and only smiles and bows, her agitation falls away, and she cannot say why. Then he asks to paint her portrait, and she agrees.
A cure that arrives through a stranger's glance is the first hint that the book's world is wider than it looks.

How it ends (spoiler)
Zara is struck dead by lightning on a balcony while guests listen to a song, just as she had quietly prepared for. Her spirit appears to the narrator and begs her to save her brother. The narrator stops Heliobas from killing Prince Ivan in a duel by reminding him of Azul, and the men are reconciled. Zara's unfinished statue is smashed, as she asked. The narrator keeps the glowing jewel and leaves for England, while Heliobas goes on to Egypt.
