A Christmas Carol in short

Ebenezer Scrooge is a rich, lonely moneylender who shuts out everyone on Christmas Eve. His dead partner, Jacob Marley, arrives in chains made of cash boxes and warns him that he is building the same fetters. Three spirits follow.

What A Christmas Carol is about

What if the coldest man in London could be offered one night to change? That is the question at the heart of A Christmas Carol, which opens on a Christmas Eve so foggy that the candles in the windows look like red smears on the air.

Charles Dickens wrote this short story in 1843 and called it a ghost story of Christmas. At its center is Ebenezer Scrooge, a moneylender who hates the holiday and turns away every request for kindness. Three spirits take him through his past, the present day, and the time to come. Each stop shows him something he cannot unsee.

Voor wie is het?. You will love this book if you enjoy ghost stories with warm hearts, vivid London streets, family feasts, and tales where one night can alter a whole life.

The story in 8 parts

Scrooge keeps the whole world at arm's length

Dickens begins by insisting that Jacob Marley is dead. Scrooge's partner has been in his grave for seven years, and his name still hangs over the warehouse door. Yet the living Scrooge is already a kind of ghost, a man frozen so deeply that no warmth reaches him.

The chill inside him keeps his office icy even at Christmas. Even the dogs of blind men pull their owners into doorways when he passes. Scrooge likes it so, and the narrator makes clear that he has chosen this loneliness.

On Christmas Eve his clerk, Bob Cratchit, copies letters in a cold little cell with a fire as small as a single coal. Then his nephew Fred bursts in, glowing from the frost and wishing everyone a merry Christmas. Scrooge answers with Bah and Humbug. Next come two gentlemen collecting money for the poor. Scrooge says those who would rather die had better do so and reduce the surplus population. Remember that phrase, because it returns.

A life closed to others is a choice, and a choice can be reopened.

Vragen over A Christmas Carol

What is A Christmas Carol about?

It tells of Ebenezer Scrooge, a lonely miser who despises Christmas. On Christmas Eve the ghost of his dead partner warns him, and three spirits show him his past, the present, and the future, offering him a chance to change.

Who are the three ghosts in A Christmas Carol?

They are the Ghost of Christmas Past, who shows Scrooge scenes from his own life, the Ghost of Christmas Present, a jolly giant who shows him how others celebrate, and the silent Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

What does Scrooge mean by Bah, humbug?

Humbug means nonsense or a fraud. Scrooge says it to dismiss Christmas, kindness, and even Marley's ghost, and the phrase shows how firmly he refuses anything that cannot be counted as money.

Why does Marley's ghost wear chains?

Marley explains that he forged the chain in life, link by link, from cash boxes, keys, ledgers, and purses. It shows how greed and neglect of others become a burden that follows a person after death.

Is A Christmas Carol easy to read?

It is short, split into five staves, and told by a friendly, joking narrator who speaks straight to you. Its scenes are vivid and its sentences carry you along, which makes it welcoming to read or hear.
