Dionysos
The twice-born god
In the most common version, Dionysus's mother, Semele, dies after seeing Zeus in his divine splendour. Zeus saves the unborn child and carries him in his thigh until his birth.
In Metamorphoses, Ovid tells how Juno tricks Semele into asking for a visit she cannot survive, leaving Jupiter to rescue their child.
In Metamorphoses by Ovid
The punishment of Pentheus
Pentheus, king of Thebes, refuses to honour Dionysus and tries to stop his worship. The god draws him into the hills, where frenzied worshippers, including his mother, tear him apart.
In The Bacchae, Dionysus persuades Pentheus to disguise himself as a woman to spy on the worshippers. His mother, Agave, returns carrying his head, believing she has killed a lion.
In The Bacchae by Euripides
The pirates and the dolphins
Sailors seize Dionysus without recognising him as a god. Vines spread across their ship, and the terrified captors leap into the sea and become dolphins.
In Metamorphoses, the sailor Acoetes tells Pentheus how he warned his companions against harming the mysterious young captive. He describes the ship's transformation and the sailors becoming dolphins.
In Metamorphoses by Ovid
