Sammendrag av Les Misérables, Book 1: A Few Pages of History, Chapter 1

Book 1: A Few Pages of History, Chapter 1 av 365 · 8 min å lese kapitlet

In Chapter 1, the narrator traces the Restoration’s collapse to the Bourbons’ belief that national freedoms are royal gifts they can withdraw. The July Revolution defeats that claim without bloody revenge, and the discussion turns toward the need to bring political reality into agreement with justice.

Handlingen

  1. The narrator introduces 1831 and 1832, then explains how exhausted nations seek peace while established political changes require protection.
  2. The Bourbons mistake national rights for royal concessions and believe their family remains the foundation of France.
  3. The July Ordinances challenge national sovereignty and individual liberty, bringing down the Restoration.
  4. The narrator acknowledges peaceful debate and public freedoms under the Restoration while criticizing the monarchy’s political blindness.
  5. France removes the Bourbons with restraint, while Charles X concerns himself with court etiquette during his departure.
  6. The narrator praises the July Revolution’s justice and gentleness, then argues that political reality must accord with right.
