Sammendrag av Great Expectations på Chapter 18

Chapter 18 av 59 · 20 min å lese chapter

In Chapter 18, Jaggers tells Pip that an unnamed benefactor provides money for his education and intends him to become a gentleman, ending his apprenticeship and arranging his move to London. Pip assumes Miss Havisham supplies the fortune, but his excitement mixes with shame about home and loneliness as Joe and Biddy face his departure.

Hva skjer

  1. At the Three Jolly Bargemen, a stranger challenges Mr. Wopsle for declaring a prisoner guilty without hearing his defense.
  2. The stranger accompanies Pip and Joe home, identifies himself as Jaggers, and announces Pip’s expectations of substantial property.
  3. Pip accepts two conditions: he keeps his name and makes no inquiries about his benefactor’s identity.
  4. Jaggers arranges education with Matthew Pocket, supplies twenty guineas for clothes, and fixes departure for a week away.
  5. Joe refuses compensation and angrily resists Jaggers’s pressure, while Pip privately assumes Miss Havisham provides the money.
  6. Pip resents familiar company and attention, yet ends the night lonely as Joe and Biddy quietly discuss him with affection.
