Who Victor Frankenstein is
Victor Frankenstein is a gifted student of natural science who grows up in Geneva surrounded by family affection. At the university of Ingolstadt, he studies how nature works and discovers how to give life to lifeless matter.
He works alone, neglecting his health and the letters that connect him to home. His achievement becomes a source of horror when he sees the living being before him and flees.
What Victor Frankenstein wants
Victor longs to uncover the secret of life, drawn first by old books about natural magic. Personal grief strengthens his wish to conquer death, while pride feeds his dream of being honored as a creator.
He imagines what his creation will owe him, without considering what care he must offer in return. This gap between ambition and responsibility shapes his choices after the creature comes to life.
Victor Frankenstein and the others in the story
Henry Clerval, his warm and imaginative boyhood friend, nurses Victor through illness at Ingolstadt. Elizabeth Lavenza grows up beside Victor, and his family expects them to marry.
The creature challenges Victor more directly, asking his maker to listen and recognize a duty toward him. Their meeting forces Victor to consider needs and feelings that his scientific dream leaves out.
