Sammendrag av Dead Souls på Chapter 9

Chapter 9 av 16 · Part 1 · 14 min å lese chapter

In Chapter 9, two women turn reports of Chichikov’s purchases into a claim that he plans to abduct the Governor’s daughter, spreading alarm throughout the town. Officials fear an investigation into their own conduct, but their inquiries reveal little, so they arrange a meeting at the Chief of Police’s home.

Hva skjer

  1. An early visitor tells Anna Grigorievna a secondhand account of Korobotchka’s dealings with Chichikov.
  2. Anna Grigorievna invents an abduction theory, names Nozdrev as an accomplice, and helps spread the story.
  3. Conflicting rumors reach the Governor’s wife, who confronts her innocent daughter and bars Chichikov from the house.
  4. Officials connect the purchases with possible official misconduct, while two warnings about criminals deepen their uncertainty.
  5. Questions to Korobotchka, Manilov, Sobakevitch, and Chichikov’s servants provide no clear explanation.
  6. The officials arrange a discussion at the Chief of Police’s home about Chichikov’s identity and their response.
