Informazioni sul libro
What do you say to your friends when the air outside may bring the end of the world?
Professor George Edward Challenger warns that Earth is about to enter a belt of poisonous ether. Young reporter Edward Malone answers his call to a country house in Sussex, where a sealed room and a supply of oxygen may offer shelter from a danger that threatens everyone.
In Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Poison Belt, a small gathering faces a vast unknown. Lord John Roxton keeps his nerve, Professor Summerlee doubts the warning, and Jessie Challenger faces fear with grace. As the countryside begins to change, Malone watches his friends confront something neither courage nor argument can defeat.

A blurred line becomes a warning
The story opens on a Friday in August, in a newspaper office. Edward Malone asks his editor, McArdle, for three days off. The old Lost World party has been invited to Professor Challenger's house at Rotherfield. McArdle shakes his head. He has a job that only Malone can do, and it leads to the very same house.
McArdle hands him a copy of the Times and asks him to read a letter aloud, because he is not sure he understands it. Challenger writes about the dark bars that cross the coloured band of a spectrum when light is split. For a week those lines have been blurred in the light of planets and stars alike. Planets and stars cannot all have changed at once, and the air shows no change. That leaves the ether, the fine medium that scientists of the day believed carried light across space.

What is The Poison Belt about?
It follows Professor Challenger and three friends across two August days when the Earth passes through a belt of poisonous ether. Challenger invites them to his house, where they seal a room and use oxygen to watch the world outside.
Do I need to read The Lost World first?
No. The Poison Belt tells its own story, and Malone introduces each of the four friends as he goes. Readers who know The Lost World will enjoy the reunion, but the book stands on its own.
What are Fraunhofer's lines and the ether in the story?
Fraunhofer's lines are dark bars in the spectrum of light. Challenger reads their blurring as a sign of change in the ether, the invisible medium that scientists of the day believed carried light through space.
