What if the force that holds us to Earth could carry us toward Jupiter and Saturn instead?
In John Jacob Astor’s A Journey in Other Worlds, the year is 2000, and engineers reshape Earth. Three friends look beyond it. Thoughtful Ayrault, determined Colonel Bearwarden, and the scholarly Dr. Cortlandt set out in a craft powered by apergy, an imagined force that works against gravity.
Their voyage takes them to Jupiter and Saturn, pictured through the astronomy of Astor’s day. Adventure gives way to patient explanations of gravity, heat, light, and planetary life. Alongside these questions, the novel explores science, faith, and the soul, imagining what might lie beyond death rather than stopping at the limits of the visible world.

A company plans to straighten Earth's tilt
The story opens with the three travelers arriving at Jupiter, before returning to their preparations on Earth. Colonel Bearwarden, president of the Terrestrial Axis Straightening Company, is about to speak to stockholders and to representatives of every government. With him are Dr. Cortlandt, a geologist and astronomer, and Richard Ayrault, a rich young stockholder who is engaged to Sylvia Preston.
Bearwarden explains the aim. Earth's axis leans about twenty-three and a half degrees, and that lean causes the seasons. Venus leans far more, and Jupiter barely at all, so a planet's lean is not fixed. The company wants an even climate in every latitude, a kind of everlasting spring.

What is A Journey in Other Worlds about?
It follows three men in the year 2000 who build a ship powered by a force called apergy, which cancels gravity. They travel to Jupiter and Saturn, hunt giant beasts, meet spirits, and test the link between science and faith.
When was A Journey in Other Worlds written and who wrote it?
John Jacob Astor published it in 1894 as a novel set a century in the future. It is not a true story. It mixes adventure with Astor's guesses about science, engineering and the life after death.
What is apergy in the book?
Apergy is an invented force, the opposite of gravity, made by charging an object with a blend of electricity. It lets the Callisto rise from Earth, steer by the moons and planets, and also lets the travelers change their own weight.
