About this book
What happens when a boy who knows everything leaves the ground—and takes his doubting friends with him?
In Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer Abroad, Tom, Huckleberry Finn and Jim leave the Mississippi behind in a strange airship. Its inventor, the Professor, makes the boys uneasy. Ahead lie the Atlantic and Africa, where deserts, lions and unfamiliar sights give Tom plenty to explain—and his friends plenty to question.
Huck tells the tale in plain river talk, full of mistakes, sharp comparisons and common sense. Tom leans on books to win arguments, while Jim worries about danger and longs for home and family. As they travel above oceans and desert, Twain turns their clashing views into jokes about learning, maps and what people think they know.

In short

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Tom Sawyer wants fame and plans a crusade
Tom Sawyer is nearly fifteen, and after his river adventures the town treats him like a hero. He struts about and enjoys being called Tom Sawyer the Traveler. Huck says it only made him hungry for more.
His rival is Nat Parsons, the postmaster, a thin, bald, talkative old man who has been the village's only famous traveler for thirty years. Long ago an unclaimed letter came with ten cents of postage due. Nat was so frightened of the government that he buried it under the floor and kept digging it up at night to bury it somewhere new. Now he and Tom try to outdo each other, and Tom keeps limping long after his leg has healed.

What is Tom Sawyer Abroad about?
Tom, Huck and Jim end up aboard a runaway balloon that carries them across the Atlantic and over the Sahara to Egypt. Along the way they meet lions, caravans, mirages and a sandstorm, and argue about what they see.
Who tells the story in Tom Sawyer Abroad?
Huck Finn tells it in his own plain, joking voice. Because he trusts what he sees and says what he thinks, the book is full of comic arguments in which his common sense meets Tom's book learning.
Is Tom Sawyer Abroad a true story?
No, it is a comic adventure. Twain wrote it in the 1890s as a sequel to the Huckleberry Finn tale. Some stories Tom tells come from the Arabian Nights, and the places are real, but the voyage is invented.
