About this book

What happens when a boy who knows everything leaves the ground—and takes his doubting friends with him?

In Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer Abroad, Tom, Huckleberry Finn and Jim leave the Mississippi behind in a strange airship. Its inventor, the Professor, makes the boys uneasy. Ahead lie the Atlantic and Africa, where deserts, lions and unfamiliar sights give Tom plenty to explain—and his friends plenty to question.

Huck tells the tale in plain river talk, full of mistakes, sharp comparisons and common sense. Tom leans on books to win arguments, while Jim worries about danger and longs for home and family. As they travel above oceans and desert, Twain turns their clashing views into jokes about learning, maps and what people think they know.

  • Wonders in the desert Encounter mirages, storms and a caravan below as Africa gives the travellers fresh puzzles.

What is Tom Sawyer Abroad about?

It follows Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and Jim as they fly in an airship from Missouri across the ocean to Africa, meeting deserts, mirages and wild animals while arguing about what they see.

Who tells the story in Tom Sawyer Abroad?

Huck Finn tells it in his own plain, dialect voice, as he does in Huckleberry Finn. That is why the wonders are described simply and the jokes often come from his misunderstandings.

Do I need to read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn first?

It helps, because you will know the three friends and their habits, but it is not required. The story is short, self-contained and easy to follow even if you are new to Twain.
