About this book
What makes a frail parson’s son become a naval leader whose men follow him through danger?
In The Life of Horatio, Lord Nelson, Robert Southey follows a boy from a Norfolk parsonage into the Royal Navy. Apprenticeship, hardship and war shape his rise. When conflict with revolutionary France opens new chances, Nelson takes command of the Agamemnon and sails into the Mediterranean.
Southey brings battles and private struggles into the same clear, vivid account. At Cape St Vincent, Nelson faces a moment when obedience may let an enemy escape. In Naples, Emma Hamilton enters his life. Through courage, affection and clouded judgment, Southey presents a commander he admires without hiding his faults.

A frail boy chooses the sea
The book opens with a child who does not look made for the navy. Horatio Nelson is born in 1758 in the parsonage at Burnham Thorpe in Norfolk. His mother dies when he is nine. At twelve he learns that his uncle, Captain Maurice Suckling, has been given a ship, and he asks to go.
Southey shows the character first. As a little boy he wanders off bird-nesting and is found sitting calmly by a brook he cannot cross. His grandmother wonders why fear did not drive him home, and he answers that he has never seen fear and asks what it is.

What is The Life of Horatio, Lord Nelson about?
It follows Nelson from his Norfolk boyhood in 1758 through his early voyages, wounds, victories at Cape St. Vincent, the Nile and Copenhagen, and the pursuit of the French fleet that leads to Trafalgar in 1805.
Why did Robert Southey write his life of Nelson?
Southey says many lives of Nelson exist, but none clear and short enough to serve as a manual for a young sailor. He wants a plain account that can be learned by heart, believing a faithful record of deeds is the best praise.
What was the Nelson touch?
It is Nelson's plan of attack for the last battle, sent to Collingwood. Two lines would break the enemy line and fight at close range, while the captains were trusted to act on their own judgment when signals failed.
