What use are courage and good birth when the world rewards money, rank and a convincing lie?
Roderick Random leaves the Scottish countryside with little money, a fierce temper and a dangerous trust in smooth talkers. Cast out by his family, he seeks a living in London with Hugh Strap, his loyal friend. But the city sees easy prey in their country manners, and a press gang brings Roderick aboard a crowded warship.
In Tobias Smollett’s rough comic novel, every new place brings another scrape, another joke and another test of character. Roderick meets cheats, bullies, ruined poets and honest sailors as he struggles for a place in the world. Beneath the bustle lies a sharp question: how far can ability carry someone who has no powerful protector?
Cosa scoprirai
- A rogue worth following Roderick’s pride, quick fists and misplaced trust keep him stumbling into fresh trouble.
- Friendship amid the swindles Hugh Strap’s patient loyalty offers warmth in a world eager to take advantage.

A boy born in an attic to hatred
The story opens before Roderick can speak. His father, the youngest son of a rich Scottish judge, secretly marries a poor relation who keeps house for the old man. While she is pregnant, she dreams that the devil strikes her baby like a tennis ball, and a Highland seer says the child will travel widely and suffer much before coming home to prosper.
The grandfather orders the couple out of his house. When the mother steals back in disguise and begs for pity, he turns away. She gives birth in an attic, on straw, and three days later the judge sends her off again. She dies of her hardships, and the father vanishes.
