About this book
What do people ask for when prayer is woven into the rhythm of every day?
Prayers of the Middle Ages: Light from a Thousand Years gathers Christian devotions from roughly a thousand years of Western Christian life. Edited by J. Manning Potts, this anthology brings together the voices of monks, mystics, bishops, teachers and ordinary believers. Their prayers reveal what they ask for, what they fear and what they give thanks for.
The collection opens a window onto prayer in monasteries, parish churches and homes. Its themes include daily devotion, the many voices behind the prayers, and recurring praise for creation and mercy. Rather than following a story or a continuous argument, you meet expressions of faith that invite slow reading and careful attention.

In short
What did a monk say to God at midnight in the year 600? What did a king pray before a battle, or a scholar before a lesson?
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Early collects give one name and one request
The book opens in the sixth century with short prayers that follow a steady pattern. Many are collects, brief prayers that gather the needs of a people into a few lines. The first voice is Gregory the Great. Most of the others come from the Gregorian Sacramentary, a service book linked to his name.
Look at how a collect is built. It names God by one trait, such as the one whose nature is always to show mercy. Then it makes a single request, here that the chains of sin be loosed by great compassion. Then it closes in the name of Jesus Christ. Three steps carry the whole prayer.
