About this book
Beyond the western sea lie magic islands; closer to home, heroes guard Ulster and the Otherworld touches ordinary life.
In Myths & Legends of the Celtic Race, T. W. Rolleston gathers the old stories of Ireland and Wales into a clear, welcoming tour. Begin with the Celts and the accounts of Greek and Roman writers, then enter tales of the Tuatha Dé Danann, love, jealousy, and a supernatural world close to our own.
Cuchulain stands at the heart of the Ulster tales, while Fionn and the Fianna roam the open country. Oisin and voyagers look beyond the western sea. The journey continues through the Welsh Mabinogion to Arthur and Tristan, as Rolleston explores the Celtic roots that he finds in these romances.

In short
Imagine a people who sack Rome, rule much of Europe, and then leave almost no writing of their own. Their envoys tell Alexander the Great that they fear only one thing, that the sky might fall on them.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
The Celts ruled Europe before Rome noticed
Rolleston begins with history, because the stories make more sense once you know the people who told them. Greek writers first name the Celts around 500 B.C., living near the sources of the Danube. They left no chronicles and no buildings, so scholars piece them together from coins, ornaments and place names.
The true Celts, he says, were a tall, fair, warlike aristocracy ruling older peoples across Gaul, Spain and Britain. Celtic envoys made a pact with Alexander the Great. Asked what they feared, they answered that only a falling sky could frighten them. Then they crushed the Roman army at the river Allia in 390 B.C.
