About this book
At Versailles, the king’s favour brings power—but no promise that you can keep it.
Madame de Montespan stands close to Louis XIV in a court where gossip, rivalry and politics share the same room. Born Françoise-Athénaïs de Rochechouart de Mortemart into an old noble family, she enters a world that expects women of her rank to shine and marry well. As the king’s mistress, she gains influence in a household where favour rules.
This book presents itself as her memoir, drawing you into the private side of royal power. Madame de Maintenon, hired by Athénaïs to care for the king’s children, becomes a rival within that household. Yet the intimate viewpoint calls for caution: published long after Montespan’s death, the work has an authorship that scholars doubt. Read it as a portrait of Versailles, not a source-checked history.

In short
What does the most talked-about woman in France say when she finally picks up the pen? Madame de Montespan, mistress of Louis XIV for about eighteen years and mother of his legitimized princes, opens by saying she is happy and wishes to stay so.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
She writes so posterity hears her side
Madame de Montespan begins by saying that future historians will want to draw the portrait of Louis XIV. They never saw him, so they must rely on people who did. That is her reason for setting down what she witnessed, and she promises a truthful account.
She knows her place at court has made her a target of false admiration and real satire. Men she helped have slandered her, and women who failed to win the King have belittled her. She compares herself to Gabrielle d'Estrees, whose line France admired, and hopes her own sons will be just as admired. She adds that she loved the most honorable man in the realm, not a mighty king.
