Sea air, secrets, and plans gone wrong: spying takes a playful turn on the west coast of Ireland.
Priscilla's Spies by George A. Birmingham brings together Irish humour, coastal adventure, and the promise of something to hide. Priscilla's name stands at the centre of a tale of sailing and secrets, where watching others belongs to a playful world rather than a grim one.
Birmingham's Irish world is full of bays, small harbours, boats, and country roads. People talk freely, and everyone knows everyone else's business. His comedy finds room for odd neighbours, unlikely heroes, and human pride. The pleasure lies in a warm, quick-moving story that laughs at people without losing its kindness.

A model prefect leaves school in glory
The story opens at Haileybury, where Frank Mannix ends the summer term at the top of his world. His brilliant catch dismissed the Uppingham captain, and his unbeaten sixty won him a bat with a silver shield. Everyone agrees that no boy has done more for the tone of the house.
Tone is the housemaster's favorite word, and the book never quite defines it. Mr. Dupré praises Frank at a feast of cherry tart and claret cup.

What is Priscilla's Spies about?
It follows a schoolboy named Frank Mannix, who visits his Irish cousin Priscilla and is drawn into her hunt for spies on an island-filled bay. Their pretend chase becomes a true quest involving secrets, a sponge lady and a powerful lord.
Who wrote Priscilla's Spies and when?
It was written by George A. Birmingham, the pen name of the Irish clergyman James Owen Hannay, in the early twentieth century. It belongs to a time when stories of German spies were popular in Britain and Ireland.
Is Priscilla's Spies a true story?
No, it is a comic novel. The bay, islands and village are invented, though the sailing, tides and Irish country life are drawn from real experience. The spy scare it plays with was a genuine fashion of the time.
