About this book
What does a lifetime of waiting for the crown reveal about the man who finally wears it?
In The Life of King Edward VII, J. Castell Hopkins follows Albert Edward from a strict childhood into decades as Prince of Wales. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert plan their eldest son's schooling with care, hoping to shape a serious heir. His marriage to Princess Alexandra of Denmark brings the couple into familiar view in public life, while the throne remains ahead.
When Victoria dies in 1901, Edward becomes king at nearly sixty. What kind of monarch will he be? Hopkins traces his reign, his work as a peacemaker, and his reputation abroad. This is also a portrait of royal life through an admiring writer's eyes: a Canadian journalist and historian who values empire, order, and a crown that stands above party.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
The Crown Becomes the Empire's Living Bond
Hopkins opens with a claim about a whole century. The great political change of the nineteenth century, he says, was a quiet peace between monarchy and democracy. The Crown became the one visible point where scattered peoples could feel they belonged together.
He gives the credit to Queen Victoria, who used personal influence in quiet ways. She rewrote the 1858 proclamation for India, and Lord Canning said her changes prevented another rising. She also refused to approve a dispatch that might have drawn Britain into the American war.
