An old feud ends with an apology
The story opens on the morning after a scare. Bessie and Dolly stand on the porch at Camp Sunset and watch the smoke thin out over Lake Dean. The night before, Gladys Cooper and Marcia Bates, two girls from the snobbish Halsted Camp next door, were lost on the mountain. Dolly and Bessie found them in a cave and led them home.
Dolly still carries a grudge. She had thrown a basket of mice among the Halsted girls as revenge for their sneering. Eleanor tells her gently that revenge is a poor tool.
