About this book

What changes when you picture the Holy Spirit as a person rather than a force?

In The Person and Work of The Holy Spirit, R. A. Torrey starts with that question and builds his answer from Scripture. Writing for ordinary Christians, he argues that the Spirit is both personal and divine. His aim is practical: to show why this understanding matters for Christian life and service.

Torrey moves from the nature of the Spirit to the Spirit's work in believers and in the world. At the heart of his teaching is a distinct empowering for service, which he calls baptism with the Holy Spirit. This is a clear argument for his position, not a balanced survey of rival views.

What you’ll discover

  • A question that matters Consider Torrey's warning that treating the Spirit as an influence shapes everything that follows.
  • The case for personhood Follow his reading of biblical language as he argues for a person, not a force.
  • A claim to divinity Explore how Torrey uses the story of Ananias to support his understanding of the Spirit.
  • The believer's daily life Trace the work Torrey says belongs to every Christian, with Scripture guiding his account.
  • Power for Christian service Examine his distinction between new birth and baptism with the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is a Person, not a power

Torrey begins with the most basic question. Is the Holy Spirit a force that God lends us, or a Person with a mind of his own? He says everything else in the book hangs on the answer.
