About this book

Deep in the Adirondack forests, a hidden prize draws outlaws into a deadly chase.

In The Flaming Jewel, Robert W. Chambers brings adventure and crime into the woods of northern New York. Outlaws, hidden treasure and a hard pursuit drive the story. The prize gives the chase its purpose, while the wilderness gives it a stage of thick forest, mountains, lakes and rivers.

The Adirondacks are more than a backdrop here. Chambers knows the region, and his eye for weather, trails and water gives the pursuit a concrete setting. This is old-fashioned adventure, with room to pause over a view or a character before the chase pulls you onward again.

What you’ll discover

  • A prize worth pursuing Hidden treasure gives the adventure a clear lure and keeps the pursuit in focus.
  • Forests that shape the story Enter an Adirondack landscape where woods and water matter as much as the chase.
  • Outlaws in the wild Follow a crime story that leaves the streets behind for the forests of northern New York.
  • An eye for place Notice the weather, trails and water through a storyteller familiar with the American Northeast.
  • Adventure with breathing room Enjoy a narrative that makes space for scenery and character alongside the pursuit.

In short

Why would a man rob a plump diamond broker on a lonely wood road, then stroll home through the forest he owns? James Darragh does exactly that in the first chapter of The Flaming Jewel.

A cipher letter sends a robber north

Two letters cross in New York. A refugee Countess writes to James Darragh that the gang of José Quintana has been found out as the thieves who robbed a young woman named Ricca. Quintana has vanished, but the diamond dealer Emanuel Sard may be in touch with him. The same morning, Sard receives a strange letter from Rotterdam. It is a long list of gem names, and it looks like nonsense.

What is The Flaming Jewel about?

It follows a chase for a rare Erosite gem stolen from a young Grand Duchess. Darragh, posing as Hal Smith, joins Mike Clinch's rough Adirondack tavern to guard the treasure from the thief José Quintana and his gang.

Who is Hal Smith in The Flaming Jewel?

Hal Smith is the false name used by James Darragh, a former Military Intelligence officer and the nephew of Henry Harrod. He pretends to be a hold-up man so that he can work at Clinch's Dump and watch for the jewels.

What is the Flaming Jewel?

It is a magnificent gem of Erosite, one of only three known in the book's world. It belonged to the Grand Duchess Theodorica of Esthonia and was stolen by Quintana's gang before the story begins.
