About this book
Deep in the Adirondack forests, a hidden prize draws outlaws into a deadly chase.
In The Flaming Jewel, Robert W. Chambers brings adventure and crime into the woods of northern New York. Outlaws, hidden treasure and a hard pursuit drive the story. The prize gives the chase its purpose, while the wilderness gives it a stage of thick forest, mountains, lakes and rivers.
The Adirondacks are more than a backdrop here. Chambers knows the region, and his eye for weather, trails and water gives the pursuit a concrete setting. This is old-fashioned adventure, with room to pause over a view or a character before the chase pulls you onward again.

A storyteller who wrote across many genres
Robert W. Chambers trained as an artist before he turned to writing. He studied in Paris, and that training shows in his habit of painting a scene in color, light and detail. He became one of the widely read American authors of his day, writing in many different modes.
He is remembered today for The King in Yellow, a book of eerie tales that later horror writers admired. He also wrote historical novels, society romances and adventure stories. His career shows a man who moved easily between moods and markets.
