About this book
What happens when a preacher declares that no woman has the right to rule?
Writing from exile in Geneva in 1558, John Knox attacks female rule without compromise. His anger centres on Catholic women in power, above all Mary Tudor of England, whose government burns Protestants. The First Blast of the Trumpet turns that anger into a fierce argument about authority.
Knox draws on scripture, ancient writers and his belief in a God-given order to challenge a woman's right to govern. He asks where obedience ends and resistance begins. Read him to examine how a reformer builds a harsh case, not to find balance or sympathy for the women he condemns.

In short
Picture a Scottish preacher at the French port of Dieppe in the closing weeks of 1557. He looks out over the sea and cannot go home.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A tract born from exile and fear
The First Blast is a work of anger written in a dark hour. Knox probably composed it at Dieppe toward the end of 1557, and it was printed early in 1558 at Geneva. He was a Scottish preacher living abroad, driven from home by the very powers he attacks.
Look at Europe as he saw it. Catherine de Medici stood at the head of France. Marie de Lorraine governed Scotland as regent for her young daughter Mary. Mary Tudor sat on the English throne, and her sister Elizabeth, the one hope of the Reformers, was kept under close watch.

What is The First Blast of the Trumpet about?
It is a tract by John Knox arguing that a woman should not rule a kingdom. Knox bases the claim on nature, Scripture, Roman law and the church fathers, and he aims it at the Catholic queens of his day.
Why did John Knox write The First Blast of the Trumpet?
Knox wrote it in exile in 1557 while Protestants were burned in England under Mary Tudor. Grief and anger at the martyrdoms led him to blame female rule, and he hoped to challenge Mary's right to reign.
What was Queen Elizabeth's reaction to the book?
Elizabeth took offense at the tract, even though it was written before she became queen. Calvin and Beza distanced themselves from it, and Knox wrote letters to explain that he had not aimed at her person.
