What if the woman who stirs your heart also threatens everything your congregation expects you to be?
In J. M. Barrie's The Little Minister, Gavin Dishart takes his first pulpit in Thrums, a Scottish weaving town where the strict Auld Lichts guard their old ways. Small, earnest and eager for respect, he wants to serve his church and honor his devoted mother, Margaret. His neighbors watch him closely.
Then a nighttime errand brings Gavin face to face with Babbie, a daring young woman who laughs at rules. As poor, angry weavers stir toward unrest, his growing love sets feeling against duty. With stern elder Lang Tammas watching his conduct, even a private choice carries a public cost.

A poor mother raises a minister by sacrifice
Gavin Dishart is not yet twenty-one when he and his mother Margaret arrive in Thrums, a weaving town in Scotland, to begin his first church. One onlooker watches Margaret more than her son. He is the schoolmaster of Glen Quharity, and he stands far off so that she will not see him.
The story goes back to the bare room in Glasgow where they once lived. Margaret decided while Gavin was a baby that he would be a minister. She sewed for wealthy families and ate almost nothing so that he could stay at school. When he came home hungry, she swore she had eaten hours ago. Gavin saw through her every time. She also taught herself grammar in a secret exercise book, so she would not shame her son in a manse.

Who is the narrator of The Little Minister?
The story is told by the schoolmaster of Glen Quharity, an older man who watches the events from his glen. He writes it as a gift for a little girl and has his own quiet connection to the people he describes.
What does Auld Licht mean in the book?
Auld Licht means Old Light, a strict Scottish Presbyterian sect that holds to old forms of worship. Its members sing only the Psalms, watch their minister closely and expect him to set a spotless example.
