About this book

Why do heroes from different nations and ages begin life in danger, far from the homes of their birth?

In The Myth of the Birth of the Hero, Otto Rank places the birth stories of Sargon of Agade, Moses, Oedipus, Paris, Perseus, Romulus, Cyrus and Siegfried side by side. Again and again, he finds a shared pattern: a child of high rank faces danger, leaves his first home and grows up among humble foster parents.

Rank asks what this repeated story might reveal about the mind. Working with Sigmund Freud's idea of the family romance, he offers a psychological reading of noble parents, threatened children and rescue from water. This short study invites you to follow his comparisons while weighing Freudian claims .

In short

What do a baby in a reed basket on the Euphrates, a prince left on a mountain slope, and a child in a manger have in common? Otto Rank says they share far more than chance can explain.

Heroes from many lands share one birth story

Rank begins by collecting. He lines up the birth stories of national heroes and founders of cities and religions, and he notices that they match, sometimes almost word for word. The peoples who told them lived far apart.

What is The Myth of the Birth of the Hero about?

It compares the birth stories of heroes such as Sargon, Moses, Oedipus, Perseus, Kyros, Romulus and Siegfried, shows that they share one pattern, and uses psychoanalysis to explain why people in many cultures told the same tale.

Who was Otto Rank and why did he write this book?

Rank belonged to Freud's circle in Vienna. He wrote the book in 1909 to show that hero legends come from the human imagination and from childhood fantasy, a gap he saw in the nature and borrowing theories of earlier scholars.

What is the family romance in Rank's book?

It is a fantasy children have, taken from Freud, in which they imagine their real parents are not their true parents and that they were born to a king or other high person. Rank says hero myths act out this fantasy.
