About this book
A fierce hit is not the answer: Harry Vardon asks you to begin with your hands.
In The Complete Golfer, Harry Vardon leads you from the first grip to the decisions that shape a match. He starts with how you hold the club and stand at the ball, then turns to the swing, iron shots, the short game and putting. Each stage asks for care rather than force.
Vardon brings a champion’s experience to the small choices that matter on the course. His overlapping grip and smooth swing draw the attention of other players, but his lessons reach beyond technique. He explores purposeful practice, temper and the steady mind a match demands, before closing with golfing reminiscences.

In short
Picture a seven-year-old on the island of Jersey sawing a branch of lady oak, burning a hole through it with a red-hot poker, and swinging it at a white marble. That boy is Harry Vardon, who grows into a man who wins the Open Championship four times and the American Championship once.

Study good players, borrow what works, practise it
Vardon was born in 1870 in Grouville, on Jersey, one of eight children. When visiting gentlemen laid out a course on the common, local boys, Harry among them, were hired to carry clubs.
The boys soon played for themselves. They marked out four short holes, used marbles for balls, and made drivers from oak with a hole burned through the head.

What is The Complete Golfer about?
It is Harry Vardon's 1905 guide to golf, mixing instruction with memoir. He explains learning, clubs, grip, swing, approach shots, bunkers, putting and competition play, and tells stories of his career, rivals and caddies.
What is the Vardon grip described in the book?
It is the overlapping grip he uses for nearly all his strokes. The left thumb lies along the shaft, the right palm covers it, and the right little finger rests on the left first finger so both hands act as one.
Is The Complete Golfer still useful today?
Its core advice still applies: learn under a teacher, keep the head still, swing smoothly, play the easiest shot, and stay calm. Details such as the clubs named reflect 1905, but the thinking behind them is clear.
