About this book
What if a quiet house holds secrets the dead are not ready to leave behind?
In The Ghost of Charlotte Cray, and Other Stories, Florence Marryat gathers the uneasy pleasures of the Victorian ghost tale. Quiet houses, family secrets and the unseen world shape this collection of Gothic short stories. The central fear is simple: the dead may still have business with the living, and familiar rooms may hold more than memories.
Marryat's interest in spiritualism gives her fascination with the unseen a place beyond fiction. Here, the title story and its companions invite you into the atmosphere of the Victorian parlour tale. These are stories for readers who enjoy lingering unease rather than fast horror: short enough for one sitting, yet capable of leaving a quiet house feeling less comfortable.

A wronged friend returns after her burial
Sigismund Braggett is a prosperous publisher in Streatham, three months married. He has one secret from his wife Emily. Charlotte Cray, a woman writer, worked cheaply for him and hoped to marry him. When he wed someone else, she sent angry letters and called at his office.
Braggett grows sorry and invites her to his home. Instead, a black bordered letter arrives. Miss Cray has died and is already buried. Then his clerks tell him she waited for him in the office, in a thick veil and a blue bonnet. The doctor shows the death certificate, yet the visits go on.

What is The Ghost of Charlotte Cray and Other Stories about?
It is a collection of ten Victorian pieces by Florence Marryat. They include ghost stories, love stories, travel sketches, an essay on household economy, and a comic detective tale. Many center on jealousy, pride, and the hidden wrongs that trouble people.
Who is Charlotte Cray?
Charlotte Cray is a clever woman writer who works for the publisher Sigismund Braggett and hopes to marry him. After he marries Emily Primrose, she demands to meet his wife. Her presence is felt in his office and home even after her death.
Are the ghost stories in this book supposed to be true?
Marryat wrote these as fiction, though in Little White Souls the narrator insists the events are true. She was interested in spiritualism, so her ghosts are treated seriously, even when a tale ends with a comic or a natural explanation.
