A stranger who smells money offers a bargain
The story opens at the Dead Hope mine in Mexico. Tom Carroll and his friends Nicky and Cliff have come to look for clues about Tom's sister Margery. Five years earlier, bandits raided a remote mine, left Tom's father dead and carried off the gold. Margery, then eleven, was never found.
All morning, a ragged miner with a scar from nose to jaw has watched the boys. He rides after them and gives his name as Henry Morgan. Tom expects a robbery, but Morgan says he simply knows things, and he admits he knows something about Margery.

Who are the Mystery Boys?
They are Tom Carroll, Cliff Gray and Nicky, three schoolmates from Amadale Military Academy. Each has a mystery in his life, and they formed a secret order with signs, oaths and codes to help one another solve them.
What is the Golden Sun in the book?
Henry Morgan first describes it as a mountain of gold. Later the old Indian Toosa says it is not a mine but something alive, and the book keeps the meaning in play as the search unfolds.
