About this book
What if a kingdom’s fate rests on one decision, and a clever mind matters more than strength?
In Turkish Fairy Tales and Folk Tales, sultans and viziers share a world with poor boys, clever girls, and djinns. A ruler’s choice can put a kingdom at stake. A strange helper may offer hope, while a powerful spirit may bring danger. Magic belongs to daily life, and wit can offer a way out of trouble.
These tales carry the warmth of stories told at firesides and in coffeehouses. Court life, supernatural encounters, and contests of cleverness sit alongside lessons about keeping your word and treating strangers kindly. Each story opens another door into a world where courage, kindness, and cunning tend to find their reward.

A Brother Becomes a Stag, a Sister Stays
The Stag-Prince begins with a Padishah's son who has spent his whole inheritance. He and his sister slip away at night and cross a burning desert. Then he sees a small puddle and swears he will drink it, even if he dies.
His sister begs him to wait, but he drinks every drop and becomes a stag on the spot. Weeping, she walks on beside him to a spring beneath a large tree. She climbs into the branches while the stag hunts for their food.

What is Turkish Fairy Tales and Folk Tales about?
It is a collection of more than twenty tales gathered from Turkish storytellers. They feature padishahs, peris, jinns, talking animals and clever fools. Heroes go on quests, face witches and dragons, and win brides and kingdoms, with forty-day feasts at the end.
Who compiled these Turkish folk tales?
Ignácz Kúnos, a Hungarian scholar of Turkish language and folklore, gathered the tales from storytellers. The tales are told in the plain, rhythmic voice of the tellers, with nonsense openings and short closing prayers or good wishes.
What is a peri in these stories?
A peri is a beautiful fairy being of Eastern lore. Peris appear as brides, queens and helpers. They can bless a baby with pearls and roses, live in hidden palaces, and turn people into birds or doves.
