About this book

Seduction, hypocrisy, and divine reckoning meet in a comedy where laughter has a sharp edge.

In Don Juan, or the Stone Feast, Molière brings seduction and hypocrisy into the world of comedy. Don Juan stands at the centre of a play whose themes invite you to look beyond charm and ask what lies beneath it.

Divine reckoning gives this comedy a darker edge. Humour and satire sit beside questions of desire and consequence, making room for laughter. The appeal lies in that tension: seduction draws you closer, while hypocrisy gives you something to question.

A servant paints his master as a villain

The play opens with Sganarelle telling Gusman, the squire of Doña Elvira, what his master is. Gusman cannot believe a nobleman would betray a wife he won from a convent. Sganarelle knows better. He calls his master devilish and heretical, a man who would wed anyone, even a cat or a dog.
