Che cos’è questo libro

Don Juan, or the Stone Feast is a comedy in five acts by Molière, the French playwright who died in 1673. It is set in Sicily and follows a nobleman who seduces, lies and mocks everything sacred, while his frightened servant Sganarelle tries to keep up with him. Molière wrote it for the stage, and it mixes sharp talk, farce and a shadow of the supernatural.

In this summary you will meet the master and the servant, the women Don Juan pursues, the brothers who hunt him, and the stone statue of a dead man who receives a strange invitation. You will see how the play moves from a witty argument about love to a quarrel about faith, and how its comedy of debts, disguises and false promises gradually darkens. Let us begin with the opening, where the servant gives his own portrait of his master.

A servant paints his master's portrait

The play opens with Sganarelle, who is taking snuff and praising tobacco above all philosophy. He talks with Gusman, the squire of Doña Elvira, who has followed Don Juan to a Sicilian city. Elvira left her convent to marry Don Juan, and now he has left her without a word.

Gusman cannot believe that a nobleman would break such a sacred bond. Sganarelle knows better. He describes his master as a man who believes in neither heaven nor hell, who marries any woman he fancies, and who has done so in many places. He admits that fear, not loyalty, keeps him in service.

Then Don Juan himself appears. He asks about Gusman and guesses why he has come. Sganarelle is nervous, and he tries to lecture his master in a roundabout way, speaking of an imaginary insolent young man. Don Juan cuts him off.

This first act gives us the pair at the heart of the play. One is bold, quick and shameless. The other is timid, talkative and always a step behind, yet he is the one who says aloud what the audience thinks.

Questions about Don Giovanni, o Il convitato di pietra

What is Don Juan by Molière about?

It follows Don Juan, a Sicilian nobleman who seduces women, breaks promises, scorns religion and ignores warnings, while his servant Sganarelle looks on. It blends farce, satire and a supernatural thread about a statue invited to dinner.

Who is Sganarelle in Don Juan?

Sganarelle is Don Juan's servant. He is funny, fearful and talkative, and he disapproves of his master's behavior yet obeys him. He often voices the moral view of the audience, though he is a poor debater.

What is the Stone Feast in the title?

The Stone Feast is the dinner to which Don Juan invites the statue of the Commander he killed. The stone guest is the one who answers the invitation and brings the play's final reckoning.

Is Don Juan hard to read?

The play is told almost entirely in lively conversation, with short scenes, running jokes, slapstick moments and a clear storyline. Its speeches are easy to follow aloud, and the farce keeps the pace quick.

What is the main message of Don Juan?

Molière shows that charm and cleverness cannot replace honesty, and he mocks those who use religion as a mask. The play suggests that a life built on lies and scorn for every duty has a cost.
