Work: A Story of Experience in short
Work follows Christie Devon from a farm kitchen into the great world of women's jobs. She serves, acts, teaches, sews, and nurses, and each trade tests her pride, her health, and her faith. Along the way she makes friends who matter more than any employer: Hepsey, Rachel, Mrs.
What Work: A Story of Experience is about
Would you walk out of a safe home at twenty-one with one trunk and a head full of hopes? Christie Devon does. Standing over a bread trough, she tells her startled aunt that a new Declaration of Independence is coming, and within a fortnight she is on the stagecoach to the city.
Work: A Story of Experience is a novel by Louisa May Alcott. It follows one ordinary woman through the jobs open to women in her America: servant, actress, governess, companion, seamstress, and more. Alcott knew many of these trades from her own life. You meet a runaway slave who becomes a true friend, a laundress who preaches with a flatiron, and a minister who gathers lost souls.
A chi è rivolto. You will love this book if you enjoy warm, outspoken heroines, friendship between women, and plain talk about work, money, faith, and love. It suits anyone who likes Alcott's humor and a heartfelt tale of finding purpose.

A restless girl chooses work over comfort
Christie Devon begins as a farm girl with an itch to be useful. While she kneads bread dough, she tells Aunt Betsey that she is of age and means to take care of herself. Her uncle Enos mocks her ambitions, but she defends her wish to become a useful, happy woman.
She explains her longing with a picture from the hearth. Two logs lie in the fire, one smoldering sadly in the corner and one blazing up the chimney. She wants her life to be the bright one, giving light and warmth and leaving something besides ashes. Aunt Betsey says both logs end as ashes anyway, and Christie answers that it matters how.
She is tired of a dreary town that cares for meals and money. She has refused to marry Joe Butterfield, whose soul is wrapped up in prize cattle and big turnips. Before she goes, she asks her uncle to forgive her, and he tells her the old house is never shut against her.
A hunger for useful work is worth the risk of leaving comfort behind.
