I ragazzi dello Zio Sam nelle Filippine in short

Two young sergeants arrive in Manila and are approached by a charming stranger who wants to buy them. They refuse. The stranger is the right hand of a datto named Hakkut, working with a planter named Draney.

What I ragazzi dello Zio Sam nelle Filippine is about

What would you do if a smiling stranger offered you a gift worth a hundred dollars, just for being a soldier? Sergeants Hal Overton and Noll Terry of the Thirty-fourth United States Infantry simply say no. That refusal follows them across the Philippine Islands.

Uncle Sam's Boys in the Philippines is the fourth book in the Boys of the Army series by H. Irving Hancock. Their regiment sails from Manila to Mindanao, where Moro chieftains called dattos are said to be planning trouble. You get secret cellars, a besieged plantation and a mountain march.

A chi è rivolto. You will enjoy this book if you like army life told in a lively way, tropical settings, loyal friends and clever scouting.

The story in 10 parts

A too-generous stranger follows two sergeants

The story opens in Manila, three days after the Thirty-fourth Infantry lands. Unknown to Hal and Noll, a Filipino dandy trails them. He wears spotless white and a blue-black mustache waxed to two sharp points. He thinks two young enlisted men must crave things only money can buy.

In a Chinese curio shop, Hal admires a carved chest he wants to send his mother, but it costs two hundred pesos. The dandy offers to give it to him for nothing. When the sergeants refuse, he urges them into a carriage for a night of pleasure. Hal pushes him aside, and the two walk away.

A storm drives them into a shed across the river Pasig. Inside, they hear the dandy name himself as Vicente Tomba and swear to make them regret it. A large, red-faced white man stands beside him, studying the boys.

Takeaway: a generous stranger who wants something in return is worth refusing at once.

How it ends (spoiler)

Datto Hakkut is finally trapped in his own fort after Hal and Noll guide the column through the gully. Faced with the Gatling gun and bayonets, he kills himself with his own sword. Hal suggests throwing his body over the wall, and the Moros lose heart and flee. Tomba is shot while running from the soldiers. Hal makes the captured Moros salute the torn flag. Draney is left unpunished for now, and the book ends with peace and a promise of another volume.
