I guardiani dei sentieri in short

The Watchers of the Trails is a set of short stories, each following one animal through one stretch of danger. A ram flees a man for a hilltop, a trout rules a pool, a bear escapes a circus, and a cow raises a calf beside a river. Frost, tides, hunters, and rivals shape other fates.

What I guardiani dei sentieri is about

What happens when a ram that has only known hedged pastures climbs a bare hilltop at sunrise and finds the wilderness waiting? In the first story, a black-faced ram knocks his keeper aside and runs for the heights of Ringwaak Hill. He knows nothing of the forest. He only knows that he is home.

The Watchers of the Trails is a book of short animal stories by Charles G. D. Roberts. He tells you the tales are fiction, built from careful observation of real habits. You meet a trout, a circus bear, a lonely bull, a gander, raccoons and a muskrat, and you learn how each hunts, hides, and reads the signs around it.

A chi è rivolto. You will love this book if you enjoy wildlife, woodcraft, and close observation of how animals hunt, hide, and survive. It suits readers who like vivid northern landscapes and short tales told with respect for every creature.

The story in 10 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A ram that longs for freedom finds a hilltop

The book opens with the black-faced ram of Ringwaak Hill. He is born in a valley of white, hornless sheep. When black-faced lambs begin to appear in the flocks, the valley people decide their breed must stay pure, and the ram is sent toward the butcher.

A young farmer buys him and leads him home over the hills on a rope. At a cold spring, the man kneels to drink with his back turned. The ram lunges with his horned forehead and sends the man tumbling into the blueberry bushes. He gallops into the woods and climbs all day to the bare top of Ringwaak.

There he finds a white ewe with a newborn lamb and takes charge of them as if the hill were his kingdom. The ewe keeps watch all night, because she knows what prowls in the dark. When a porcupine strolls by, she butts the ram aside just before he sniffs it. Instinct pulls an animal toward the wild, but it does not hand over forest knowledge.

Courage needs knowledge beside it, and the ewe has the knowledge the ram lacks.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • The black-faced ram A throwback sheep who escapes his keeper and claims the wild hilltop of Ringwaak, accompanied by a wiser ewe.
  • The master of Golden Pool A great trout who has outwitted anglers for years by checking every lure for the thread that means a hook.
  • The circus bear A tame bear raised in cages who flees his trainer and climbs toward the mountain den of his cubhood.
  • The black bull of the Quah-Davic A wild-born calf of a farm cow who grows huge in the woods and searches for company he cannot find.
  • The old gander A wild goose who leads his flock until a hunter wounds him, captures him, and uses his voice as a lure.
  • The mother raccoon A quick, fierce mother in a hollow sycamore who hunts frogs by moonlight and protects her five young.
  • The big muskrat The boldest muskrat on Bitter Creek, who guards his winter house's water gate and survives a young hawk's attack.
  • Steve Williams A lumber camp axeman who drives through a Christmas Eve night with his son, hoping to reach home by breakfast.

How it ends (spoiler)

Many of these stories end in sudden loss. The ram goes meekly home behind the man and his ewe. The great trout falls to an otter, and the circus bear is shot by a camp boss who sees his collar too late. The black bull is shot at the cabin. The decoy gander dies from the shot of a careless pot-hunter. The raccoon family is lost but for one young survivor, who goes home with the schoolmaster. The trapper and the bear escape the falls together, and the Christmas travelers reach home safely.

Domande su I guardiani dei sentieri

What is The Watchers of the Trails about?

It is a collection of short animal stories by Charles G. D. Roberts. Each follows a wild or half-tame creature, such as a ram, trout, bear, moose, raccoon, or muskrat, through a moment of danger in the northern woods.

Are the stories in The Watchers of the Trails true?

The preface calls them openly fictional but built on careful observation of real animal habits. Roberts grew up near the forest, and he dated the preface April 1904, so the book comes from his firsthand knowledge.

Who is the author Charles G. D. Roberts?

He was a Canadian poet and writer from New Brunswick who died in 1943. He is known for animal stories and poems, and he dedicated this book to Ernest Thompson Seton, a fellow writer of the wild.

Do the animals think like humans in this book?

Roberts says he avoids giving animals human thoughts. He describes their actions in close detail and infers simple motives from them, such as hunger, fear, or loneliness, rather than making them speak or reason like people.

Can I read the stories one at a time?

Yes, they stand alone. Each tale is short and self-contained, with its own setting and creature, so you can pick any one, such as The Truce or The Decoy, and enjoy it without the others.
