La vipera di Milano in short
The Viper of Milan follows one summer in the life of a tyrant who wants all of Lombardy. Gian Galeazzo Visconti rules by fear, bribes where he cannot fight, and counts every kindness as a weakness. Against him stand an exiled prince, a stranger with an old wound, a vain German count, a captive sister, and a painter's family who wish only to be left in peace.
What La vipera di Milano is about
A green viper on a silver field flies from every gate of Milan, and the peasants on the road cringe at the sight of it. Then a golden coach rolls out of the city, and a calm horseman in plain green reads poetry aloud while he whips the old man and woman riding inside. Those two are his own parents.
That is how Marjorie Bowen introduces Gian Galeazzo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan, in the year 1360. The Viper of Milan is a romance of Lombardy, written by the English author when she was very young. It tells of a tyrant who wants every city in northern Italy, and you get ambition, poison, betrayal and honor.
A chi è rivolto. You will enjoy this if you like Italian history in bright colors, villains who charm and frighten at once, doomed loves, secret passages, and old tales of honor and treachery.

A green viper rules the road to Milan
The story opens on a bright spring day, with ten banners flying over Milan. Each shows the same green viper, the sign of the Visconti. The peasants who trudge toward the city have learned to lower their eyes.
Two young Florentines walk behind them. Tomaso is about nineteen and his cousin Vittore is a boy of ten or twelve. Then a golden coach appears at the city gate, carrying an old man and woman, painted and trembling. Behind them rides Gian Galeazzo, reading verses and flicking a long whip at the pair.
Tomaso cannot bear it. He steps forward with hot words, and the Duke strikes him across the face and rides on. The peasants drag the bleeding youth into a ditch and leave him there, because help for a victim of the Visconti may bring the same fate.
Fear is the real government of Milan, and one act of courage costs more than most people can pay.

Visconti's plots reach their height. Mastino della Scala, to save his wife Isotta, gives up every city he holds, and his own soldiers curse him as a traitor. Visconti sends Isotta back dead, killed by a poisoned ring. Mastino rides mad with grief to Visconti's palace and is killed by the guards. Graziosa, who betrayed the rescue plot for love of the Duke, dies by her own hand. In the garden of the palace, Giannotto stabs Visconti as the Duke kisses Isotta's dead face, and the Duke dies calling for Milan.
