La stanza nella torre e altri racconti in short

Seventeen tales, one design. A teller, often a friend by the fire, says that something happened to him or to someone he knows. A house, a room or a stretch of road is described so clearly that you can walk through it.

What La stanza nella torre e altri racconti is about

Imagine the same dream visiting you for fifteen years. A red-brick house, tea on a hot lawn, a silent family, and one sentence from the lady of the house, who says that Jack will show you to the room in the tower. You wake in terror every time. Then one summer day, you step out of a car and find the house is real.

This is the opening story of The Room in the Tower, and Other Stories by E. F. Benson, a collection of seventeen ghost tales. Benson wrote them to give readers a few pleasant shivers before bed. Most are told by a friend beside the fire, in calm, clear English, which makes the dread feel close.

A chi è rivolto. Readers who like ghost stories told by firelight, haunted rooms with clear layouts and puzzling cases of the unseen will enjoy this book.

The story in 10 parts

A recurring dream leads to a real house

The title story opens with a narrator who dreams nearly every night and finds most of his dreams ordinary. Then he warns that the story that follows has no easy explanation at all.

At about sixteen, he begins to dream of a large red-brick house. A servant leads him through a dark hall to tea on the lawn, where he meets the family of a schoolmate named Jack Stone. Everyone sits in silence in an airless heat. Then Mrs. Stone tells him that Jack will show him to the room in the tower. His heart sinks, because he knows something dreadful waits there. The door closes behind him, and the terror wakes him.

The dream returns about once a month for fifteen years, and the family ages as real people do. Then, on a drive through Sussex, he wakes at a doorway and finds the house from his dreams. The hostess speaks the old sentence. Benson makes the dread arrive before any proof.

A dream can become a place you are able to walk into.

How it ends (spoiler)

Most tales close on one short blow. In the title story, the guest learns that Julia Stone killed herself in the tower and her coffin was found full of blood. In Gavon's Eve, Sandy drowns trying to reach Catrine, and both bodies are found. In The Dust-Cloud, the car arrives in Bircham. In The Bus Conductor, a speeding car crashes into a bus at Sloane Square. The Cat and The Man Who Went Too Far end in violent deaths.

Domande su La stanza nella torre e altri racconti

What is The Room in the Tower and Other Stories about?

It is a collection of seventeen ghost stories by E. F. Benson. They range from a dream house that proves real to a phantom car, a haunted hotel bed and a condemned man who telephones his doctor.

Is The Room in the Tower a true story?

No. It is fiction, written as a first-person tale of a recurring dream. Benson often presents his stories as things told by a friend or witness, which gives them the feel of a genuine account.

Which stories does the collection include?

Besides the title story, it contains The Dust-Cloud, Gavon's Eve, The Confession of Charles Linkworth, At Abdul Ali's Grave, Caterpillars, The Cat, The Bus Conductor, The Man Who Went Too Far and The Thing in the Hall, among others.

Is it easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that the language is clear and each tale is self-contained. Most are told in a plain, conversational voice by someone sitting by a fire, so you can read one at a time.

What is the main idea behind Benson's ghosts?

Several characters suggest that strong emotion, such as terror or guilt, can be left in a place and picked up later by sensitive people. Benson shares the idea but lets skeptics argue back.
