A chi è rivolto

This book suits readers of history, propaganda and media literacy, and anyone who wants to see how a false story about a whole people was built, spread and taken apart.

Che cos’è questo libro

What if a document claimed to be the secret minutes of a plot to rule the world, and most of it was copied from a French satire about a different man? That is the case with the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, twenty-four short speeches that pretend to be a Jewish plan to dominate the earth. No such plan ever existed.

This book prints the protocols as Sergiei Nilus, a Russian religious writer, published them in 1905. It adds a commentary for American readers from 1920 that tries to prove them genuine. You will hear what the text claims, how its so-called proof works, where it came from and what it caused.

Punto chiave 1 di 10

One book joins a forgery and its defense

The book has two layers. The first is the text of twenty-four protocols, each presented as a talk to a gathering of Jewish leaders. The second is a commentary written around 1920 to lend the forgery an air of proof.

The first layer has no author inside it. A speaker says we and calls other peoples the Goys. No place, date or speaker is named. Nilus put the text into a book in 1905 and gave different accounts of how he obtained it. None has ever been supported by evidence.

The commentary says the book is not published for antisemitic reasons. Yet its whole method is to treat the Jewish people as a single body that acts by a single plan, which is exactly the claim the forgery makes.

To judge this book, keep the forged text and the argument built to defend it apart.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about I protocolli e la rivoluzione mondiale

What are the Protocols of the Elders of Zion about?

They claim to be speeches by Jewish leaders planning to rule the world through gold, the press and political chaos. They are in fact an invented text, and nothing in them records a real meeting or a real plan.

Are the Protocols of the Elders of Zion real?

No. Researchers showed that much of the text was copied from Maurice Joly's 1864 French satire on Napoleon III. The Times exposed the borrowing in 1921, and a Swiss court named the text a forgery in 1935.

Who wrote the Protocols?

No author is named in the text. Sergiei Nilus published it in Russia in 1905, but historians trace its sources to Joly's satire and a German novel, and many suspect Russian secret police circles of shaping it.

What is the second part of this book about?

It is a commentary from 1920 that tries to show the Protocols are genuine by comparing them with the Bolshevik regime, quotations from Jewish writers and news reports. Its method of selecting and stitching together excerpts does not hold up.

Why is the book still read and studied today?

It is a clear specimen of how disinformation is built and spread. Reading the forgery together with the commentary written to defend it helps people recognize conspiracy stories and understand the harm they caused.
