Il romanzo picaresco in short
The book follows the rogue from his first appearance to his many cousins. Lázaro is a boy with no inheritance who survives a blind beggar, a hoarding priest and a starving squire. Cervantes shows a whole city's thieves as a pious guild.
What Il romanzo picaresco is about
What does a boy learn when a blind man slams his head against a stone bull? Lázaro de Tormes says he learns to wake up. At a bridge in Salamanca his new master tells him to put an ear to the stone animal and listen. The blow that follows ends his childhood on the spot.
This book gathers the first great rogue stories of Spain's Golden Age, the tales we call picaresque. It holds the anonymous Lazarillo de Tormes, Cervantes's Rinconete and Cortadillo, Quevedo's Don Pablos, and short passages from Mateo Alemán and Luis Vélez de Guevara. You get hungry boys, crooked priests, penniless gentlemen and thieves who never miss Mass.
A chi è rivolto. Readers who love sharp comic storytelling, clever underdogs, and satire of church and class will enjoy this anthology. It also suits lovers of old Spanish city life and the roots of the modern antihero.

A blind man teaches Lázaro to survive
Lázaro de Tormes tells his life in a letter to a man he calls Your Honor. His father is caught cutting the sacks of the farmers and sent away, and his widowed mother takes work at an inn in Salamanca. A blind beggar there asks for the boy as a guide. Lázaro walks off with his first master.
At the bridge leaving the city, the blind man tells Lázaro to listen to a stone bull. The trusting boy leans in, and the man smashes his head against the stone. Then he laughs and says that a blind man's boy must know more than the devil. Lázaro says that in that instant he woke up from his childish sleep.
From then on master and boy fight a war over food. Lázaro unpicks the sack where the bread is locked and sews it up again. He drinks the wine through a straw until the man breaks his teeth with the jug. Lázaro answers by leading his master into a stone pillar in the rain.
Kindness is a luxury and wit is a tool. Hard masters make clever servants.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- Lázaro de Tormes A miller's son from near Salamanca who serves a string of cruel masters and learns to steal food and trick his way through hunger.
- The blind man Lázaro's first master, a shrewd beggar with a hundred prayers who teaches the boy to look out for himself and hoards every coin.
- The squire of Toledo A proud gentleman with an empty house, a sharp sword and no money, who clings to honour while his servant feeds him.
- Rinconete Pedro del Rincón, a young cardsharp and son of an indulgence seller, who wants to make his living with marked cards.
- Cortadillo Diego Cortado, a tailor's son turned pickpocket, who leaves home to practise his light-fingered skill in the cities of the south.
- Monipodio The huge, hairy and devout boss of Seville's thieves, who runs his brotherhood like a guild with rules, dues and masses.
- Pablos Quevedo's rogue, the son of a barber and a reputed witch, who wants to be a gentleman and hide his family.
- The Lame Devil A small, crippled demon trapped in a flask who offers a fleeing student a flight over Madrid in return for his freedom.
How it ends (spoiler)
In Lazarillo, the squire sends Lázaro to change a coin, and never returns. Creditors arrive, find the house empty, and take an old woman's bedcover, leaving Lázaro to learn that his master has abandoned him. Rinconete and Cortadillo stay in Seville for months, while Cervantes leaves the rest of their story for another time. Pablos decides to sail for the Indies, but learns that changing place without changing habits brings no better luck. The Lame Devil carries Don Cleofás to the tower of San Salvador.

Domande su Il romanzo picaresco
What is the picaresque novel?
It is a Spanish form of fiction in which a poor, clever outsider, the picaro or rogue, tells his own story. He moves from master to master and survives by tricks, showing the faults of society along the way.
What is Lazarillo de Tormes about?
It follows a poor boy named Lázaro who serves a blind beggar, a stingy priest and a starving squire. He tells his life to a person called Your Honor, describing hunger, tricks and what each master taught him.
Who wrote Lazarillo de Tormes?
Nobody knows. It appeared anonymously in Spain in the sixteenth century. Scholars have suggested several names, but none has been proved, and the unknown author is part of why the book is so often discussed.
Who is Monipodio in Rinconete and Cortadillo?
Monipodio is the head of Seville's thieves in Cervantes's tale. He rules a brotherhood with dues, rules, spies, lookouts and religious devotions, and he welcomes the two young newcomers by giving them new names.
