Che cos’è questo libro
What does a young man do when the city he has come to seems built for dying? Malte Laurids Brigge, a penniless Danish nobleman of twenty-eight, walks through Paris and sees hospitals, a collapsing stranger and a pregnant woman at a wall. He answers by writing.
Rainer Maria Rilke finished this novel in 1910, after years of living in Paris himself. It is made of notebook entries with no single plot line. You get a poet's training in attention, and you see what it costs and what it gives.

Paris greets Malte as a city of dying
The book opens with Malte walking through Paris and observing scenes of illness and distress. He would have thought it a place where people come to die. He finds a place where they seem to come to die. He checks his map for a maternity house and a military hospital, then notices an unmapped night shelter.
He notes the smells, a blend of iodoform, fried potatoes and fear. At night trams, breaking glass and shrieking voices crash through his open window. A rooster at dawn comforts him like an old friend.
He describes the Hôtel-Dieu, the huge hospital beside the cathedral. In his view, modern people die factory deaths, and the wish for a death of one's own is becoming rarer. He is afraid, and he decides to sit up at night and write.
Malte answers the fear of a harsh city by looking at it carefully and writing down what he sees.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about I quaderni di Malte Laurids Brigge
Is Malte Laurids Brigge a real person?
No, Malte is an invented character, though he shares experiences with Rilke, such as living in Paris. The book is a novel, not a diary, and Rilke finished it in 1910.
How is the book arranged?
It is made of entries that move between observations, memories, historical portraits and reflections. A street scene may be followed by a childhood memory or a portrait of a king. You can read it entry by entry and enjoy each one as its own piece.
Who are Abelone and the Lady with the Unicorn?
Abelone is Malte's aunt, whose singing and unreturned love stay with him. The Lady with the Unicorn is a set of six medieval tapestries he describes, in which a woman and two beasts act out a quiet drama.
What is the main message of the book?
Rilke suggests that real art comes from lived experience, that fear is a force we must meet, and that love at its best asks nothing back. Learning to see honestly, even what hurts, is the book's central task.
