A chi è rivolto

This book suits readers who love true voices from the past, first-hand witness, stories of courage and faith, and the history of the fight against slavery.

Che cos’è questo libro

At a market in Hamble Town, Bermuda, a girl of about twelve stands against a wall while strangers handle her like a calf. She is sold for fifty-seven pounds. Her two sisters are sold to other owners.

The History of Mary Prince tells how she survived and found her voice. Mary Prince was born enslaved in Bermuda, was sold again and again, worked in the salt ponds of Turk's Island, and was taken to Antigua and then to London. A friend wrote down her account, and it reached the English public in 1831, when the fight over slavery was loud and unfinished.

A gentle childhood hides the truth of slavery

Mary Prince is born at Brackish-Pond, Bermuda, on a farm owned by Mr. Charles Myners. Her mother is a household slave. When old Mr. Myners dies, his family divides the enslaved people like furniture. Captain Darrel buys Mary and her mother together, and he gives Mary to his young grandchild, Miss Betsey Williams.

The years that follow are the happiest she knows. Mrs. Williams is kind to her people, and Betsey treats Mary as a playmate. Mary is too young to understand her condition. Even so, the shadow is there. The master, Captain Williams, is harsh and selfish, and the household dreads his return from sea.

Then money runs short. Before Mary is twelve, Mrs. Williams hires her out to a Mrs. Pruden, five miles away. Mary sobs as she kisses her mother goodbye. There she tends a baby and walks with him by the sea, and a young daughter of the house teaches her letters.

Mrs. Williams dies. Soon after, Mary is told that her master means to marry and sell her and two sisters to pay for the wedding.

A kind owner can still sell you when a debt comes due.
