La Fanciulla d'oro e altri racconti popolari e fiabe narrati in Armenia in short
Taken together, the tales show a world where the weak survive by kindness, wit and loyal friends. Stepmothers and jealous brothers threaten the good. Heroes and heroines meet fairies, giants, snakes and sparrows, and each creature judges them by how they treat others.
What La Fanciulla d'oro e altri racconti popolari e fiabe narrati in Armenia is about
Picture a winter night in a village high in the Taurus Mountains. The fire burns low, and children sit in a ring around an old woman. She begins with a boy who drinks from a lamb's hoofprint and turns into a lamb, and nobody moves until her last word.
This book gathers that kind of tale. A. G. Seklemian grew up in Cilicia, listened to his grandmothers and aunts, and wrote down stories from country people across Armenia. He put them into English for readers far from the mountains. You meet nearly thirty tales, with dragons, giants, fairies, magic rings, clever wives and brave youngest sons.
A chi è rivolto. You will love this book if you enjoy fairy tales with real bite, fireside storytelling, brave youngest sons and quick-witted heroines, or the folklore of the Armenian highlands and Mount Ararat.

These tales come straight from village firesides
The author grows up in a village high in the Taurus Mountains of Cilicia. There are no storybooks there. Instead he has two grandmothers and half a dozen aunts, all unschooled country women with a rich store of tales. On winter evenings, children and grown people gather at the hearth to hear about fairies, giants, dragons and captive maidens.
He memorizes many of the stories and becomes a known storyteller while still a boy. In Armenian homes he hears the same tales again, with small changes to suit each place. So he begins to take notes as country people speak.
When the versions differ, Seklemian follows whichever seems most original. Every tale was written down from people who cannot read. Mount Ararat looms over everything, with its snowy summit, deep canyons and great birds, and Persian, Arabic and Turkish touches show in the telling. These tales are living speech, caught from people who have told them for generations.

The closing ballad ends in sorrow. While the lovers rest on Mount Ararat, Sia-Manto chases a wild gray bull and is thrown onto a sharp oak trunk in a ravine. Guje-Zare reaches the edge, calls down to him and leaps to lie in his arms. They die together, saying each other's names. Two twin flowers bloom there in spring, with butterflies resting on them. Most other tales close with weddings and the punishment of the wicked.
