A chi è rivolto
Readers who enjoy sharp opinions backed by evidence will love this collection, as will admirers of Middlemarch curious about its author's thinking on ethics, women, religion, art and society.
Che cos’è questo libro
What does a novelist do when she sets fiction aside and reviews other people's work? George Eliot, who wrote Middlemarch and Silas Marner, spent her early career writing essays for a magazine. This collection gathers ten of them, from a biography of a restless clergyman to a speech she gives her own character, Felix Holt.
They are quick, funny and sometimes fierce. A short preface points out her chief habit, which is to ask why people act as they do. Each essay tests one idea against evidence.

Punto chiave 1 di 10
A good biography shows the person, not the paperwork
Eliot opens with Carlyle's life of his friend John Sterling. Sterling was an earnest, restless man with a quick mind. His outer life was thin, with poor health, a few months as a curate and many journeys in search of a milder climate. Yet she holds that the book deserves attention.
Why write a second life when Archdeacon Hare had already written one? Eliot agrees with Carlyle that the first book was too apologetic. She wants short, vivid lives in place of three dreary volumes of letters and diaries.
The sharpest quarrel is over Sterling's choice of the Church. Hare thinks orders might have straightened him. Carlyle says the choice was the mistake, since Sterling was an artist and not a saint. Eliot sides with Carlyle. A life is well told when a few chosen strokes make a person understood.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
