A strange light and a buried dragon
The story opens on a nearly empty beach in October. Leslie Crane has come with her aunt, Miss Marcia Crane, a nervous invalid whose doctor ordered quiet by the sea. They live in a small bungalow called Rest Haven. The only other house close by is a shut-up cottage with a name Leslie adores, Curlew's Nest.
Leslie is happy among the waves, but she is lonely, and she must hide every worry from her aunt. Then a northeast gale arrives. From her window Leslie sees her dog Rags growl and bristle. A moment later she is almost sure she sees a thin streak of light through a crack in the shutters of the empty cottage.
The next morning she meets Phyllis Kelvin, a plump, cheerful girl who lives at Fisherman's Luck, the bungalow along the beach. Phyllis believes in ghosts. When Leslie tells her about the light, Phyllis is thrilled and begs her to keep it secret.
On the walk back they find Rags with his hindquarters sticking out of a deep hole beside an old log. He backs out dragging a small burlap sack. Inside is a heavy casket carved with a winged serpent. The dragon's head sits over the lock, and no one can find a catch or even a seam. Something rattles inside. Phyllis sees that the metal is barely tarnished, so the box was buried only lately. She takes it home and names it The Dragon's Secret.

Rags gets a collar and a five-dollar bill for steaks.
